Friday’s Musings and other Oddities

I ran smack dab in to Scott Hanselman’s Blog Interesting – 32 Ways to Keep Your Blog from Sucking and was pleasantly surprised to find many of my recommendations there. I especially appreciated numbers three and five. I find that if a blog is too negative I tend not RSS it or go back. I thought the ‘Use Spell Check’ – ‘Nuff said.” was funny.

WhatYouNeedToKnow

Suzy’s taking me to the movie of the second in Chronicles of Narnia series. I’ve always enjoyed reading C. S. Lewis and this series sold over 100 million copies in 41 languages. Would you believe there *are* people who don’t believe that:

  • Animals can talk
  • Magic exists
  • Good battles evil

It’s kinda sad me thinks, but per Scott’s recommendations above we’ll move on. “Move on, folks. There’s nothing to see here.”

Finally I ran across Perk of Good Job: Again Mind is Sharp that maintains that having a complex job may slow age-related mental decline. Part of me, the statistician, wonders how you prove this as people with complex jobs already might be genetically wired to battle age-related problems. Still it has a nice, feel good ring to it:

“Jobs that have elements where you need to solve problems, plan and organize, and think flexibly and on your feet appear to carry cognitive benefits throughout your life. You can potentially draw on them later as reserves,” Duke University psychologist Guy G. Potter, PhD, tells WebMD.

I guess I better get back to work.  ;o)

About Gandalfe

Just an itinerant saxophonist trying to find life between the changes. I have retired from the Corps of Engineers and Microsoft. I am an admin on the Woodwind Forum, run the Seattle Solid GOLD Big Band (formerly the Microsoft Jumpin' Jive Orchestra) a GOLD sax quartet, and enjoy time with family and friends.

Very interesting link! Thanks for sharing!!!

I proudly stand up and say animals do talk….provided you can have the ears to listen!! you don’t have to always communicate in the human language right?

    Take care,
    Isa

Thought I’d give YOU a visit on this fine German spring day. You and your lady should come travel through Germany with your instruments. The cites here in Germany love to have street musicians and we have had some wonderful ones here in Heidleberg. Play your sax here!

I have not yet gone to the link. but the part you mentioned about negativity strikes a bold and loud not with me.  There are three in my circle as it were that I can’t bear to visit any more.  They are ragingly negative and one opinion only stated..not balanced, and there was never a let up.  And spell check..yes.  It’s easy to do and a kindness.Of course animal communicate.  :-)  Mine has me doing exactly what she wants.  You have to learn their sounds and biody language.  Easy when you care.  No..there is no magic.

  4. JaAG says:

To all, I often can be found talking to my animals.  :o)

Barbie, we miss Germany. Having been there twice we have fond memories. But there is so much to see in the world, I doubt we’ll get back. I left you particulars on your blog.

Carole, carole, carole, do I have to come there to show you magic? Of course there is magic; it’s just harder to see and recognize now-a-days. I see magic in Suzy’s smile, the cats playing, and the flowers growing. I guess it depends upon how one defines… magic.   :o)

Since my last job at the AFB was proofing and correcting  officer performance reports, I know the necessity of correct wording and spelling.  Negativity, nah, only when I am feeling way down.
    Good post.

  6. Laoch says:

Scott Hanselman is a pretty impressive guy.  His blog is full of good programming stuff.

  7. Laoch says:

Oh, you might find this to be cool: suspension bridge also doubles as musical instrument.

  8. _ says:

Great pointers. Also on Scott’s page. Lots to keep in mind. Have a great weekend.

  9. barbara says:

Gandalf, I understand about ‘so much to see in the world’. One should step through the door of adventure as it is open to you. That is exactly why I am here and if that aint magic then there aint none. There’s a fellow in the Hauptstrasse, plays a sax… always plays ‘My Way’. Yep, it has been…. The notes drift up and away through the pink stones of the Old Town…….

  10. Rambling says:

Oh yes, then you are right.  There IS magic.  :-)  Indeed there is.  I could write pages and have written pages about that magic you speak of.

  11. Elizabeth says:

    "Jobs that
have elements where you need to solve problems, plan and organize, and
think flexibly and on your feet appear to carry cognitive benefits
throughout your life."Well, if that’s the case, I’ve reached my mental potential. 😉

I’ve discovered Narnia isn’t until next week. No worries as we went to the last concert of the Seattle Symphony’s Pop season. Good stuff.
